My mundane chores knives Page Updated : June 7th 2002

From the various e-mails I received when I reported the CQC-7 problems on my site, I learned a lot about the folding knives. One of them is that you do not use a defence knife for mundane chores. I therefore decided that I had to separate my folders, according to the usage I'll put them to. As a result, the CQC-7 and the S&W G10 (when I finished working with it) will be my defence knives. The role of my "utility" knives will be assigned to the followings:

Beretta Folder

This could have been a great defence folder. It features a stainless steel blade of 3.25" and its handles are covered with rubber, which make it totally slip-proof. However, its opening is by a nail-slot and it takes some effort to switch its blade open. Its closing is accomplished by pressing the golden 9mm round on its side. Additionally, its locking is not examplery, some motion can be detected when the blade is locked, if it is pushed towards the closed position. As a result, this knife will be my prime "mundane chores knife".

Zippo Folder

The second role in the Utility Knives category will be assigned to the Zippo. This is a small lockback folder, made by the same company which makes the windproof lighters we all love. It is made of stainless steel and it is relatively small (its blade being 2" long), so it is quite convenient to carry it on one's person in its small sheath.

Victorinox Camping

My third mundane chores knife, is a Victorinox Camping folder, shown above. This multi-knife includes : One long and one short blade, a can opener, a cork-screw/small flat screwdriver, a punch, a big flat screwdriver/bottle cap opener. Oh, it also has a ... toothpick! Given the Victorinox quality, it should be up to the task.

Finally, together with the previously mentioned Cold Steel knives, I also ordered a small, key-ring knife, the Cold Steel TuffLite, with (of course) a tanto blade.

Cold Steel TuffLite

Typically, the Zippo is carried on my belt, while the Beretta and the Victorinox are stored in my truck's glove compartment, together with a Leatherman Wave. The TuffLite is attached to my car keys ring. As far as the mundane tasks are concerned, I guess I am quite well equipped.
