SOG AutoClip Page Updated : June 7th 2002

Well, this is the knife I intended to use as my primary mundane chores knife, but after I saw it and handle it, I am not that sure it deserves that role. It can safely be used as a self-defence tool, and it is quite attractive in its ... sexy red color.

This is an excellent knife, of proper size for my hands. The 3.6" blade is made of AUS 6 steel and looks quite strong. The handles are made out of Zytel, a synthetic (read polymer) material. Its size fits my hand perfectly and the only thing I added as soon as I got it, was a thumb stud. Typically this knife comes only with a slot cut on the upper part of its blade, which your finger should engage to push the blade open. I'd rather have a more fast indexing method, such as a protruding thumb stud, instead of the cut, so I used one of the studs that my friends from Taylor Cutlery had send me to add this functionality to this little beauty. After a little filing work, the stud fitted the slot fine. I secured it with some Loctite and it now offers a much more secure opening method. Actually, SOG is now offering a similar knife, with a tanto-like blade, which comes from the factory with a thumb stud, called the X-42 Autoclip. It's a pity that this knife comes only in black color and with the new blade, the clip point blade of my red beauty is so purpose-looking!

One interesting feature of this SOG knife, is the way its pocket clip can be adjusted to suit the thickness of your trouser's material. If you wear jeans, you adjust it a bit more wide, if you wear your Armani suite, tighten it up a bit and the knife is equally secure in both instances.

The adjustement is done by a thumb wheel at the rear of the knife.

Purchased from : Knifecenter.com
Overall impression : Excellent but a bit pricey at 47.95 US$.

P.S. : If you are not interested in the red version, the same knife in black color can be had by almost every internet cutlery shop at around 39 US$.

I'll be adding more information about this knife, as I use it.
